Otoplasty is also referred to as ‘Pinnaplasty’ and is a surgical procedure that aims to make improvements to the shape and position of one or both of the ears, whereby the patient feels they are overly prominent.

The shape and size of our ears are usually determined by our genetics and, as with all facial features, have a unique appearance to each individual.

It is not uncommon for a person’s ears to have differences between the left and the right side, with one ear protruding more than the other or having a noticeable difference in shape and size. Cosmetic surgery for the ears can also correct ear lobes that have become stretched or split or have prominent creases.

The form of which the ear has taken, be it genetically or by way of trauma, is not representative of the way in which it functions and aesthetic surgical procedures for the ear are intended to create a more natural and pleasing appearance for the affected person.

The ears are fully grown by the age of 5 and many people who are affected by misshapen or protruding ears have found the social implications inflicted from their peers during childhood have led to this condition causing feelings of lost confidence and low self-esteem. It is for this reason that people may seek treatment to feel better about their appearance and subsequently boost their confidence.

Surgery involves making an incision on the back of the ear, where there is a natural crease, removing some skin and re-shaping or removing some of the cartilage. The wounds are closed using fine stitches and some sutures could be used to stabilise protruding ears and bring them closer to the head. Dressings will be applied to the ear(s) and a headband may need to be worn, certainly during the night for anywhere between 2 and 4 weeks after the operation in order for gentle pressure to be applied while healing takes place. The operation can be performed under either a local or a general anaesthetic and may be treated as a day case.

The results from this treatment will develop over a period of a couple of months. The first initial weeks will see some swelling and bruising and the patient will need to adopt a rested attitude to activity levels for a couple of weeks, while the effects settle. Mr. Marando will assess your individual condition and personal goals at a pre-operative consultation and this will determine the most effective technique to correct your individual concern. Your recovery and healing will be closely monitored and supported by Mr. Marando through considerate follow-up consultations.

If you are in good health, healing will be more successful, but in some infrequent instances patients have experienced, delayed healing, infection and poor scarring. Mr. Marando will ensure you are fully informed of the associated risks during the consultation prior to treatment.

How much downtime is usually needed?

As this treatment is often treated as a day case, you will be able to go home on the same day of surgery, but you may need to arrange for someone to transport you home. Up to 3 weeks should be considered for taking things easy, with time off work and driving arranged during this time. 6 weeks may be needed before resuming strenuous exercise regimes.
