The nipple itself may appear too wide or uneven in shape, or most commonly, overly protruding in size. The areola is the area of softer skin that surrounds the nipple and is pink or brown in colour. This too can be of unsatisfactory appearance to a person: presenting a misshapen form, being puffy or raised from the skin, or simply too large in proportion to the developed breast.

The procedure is most often carried out under local anaesthetic, when performed on its own, but can also be part of a combination of procedures, when a general anaesthetic may be used, including: breast lift, breast augmentation or breast reduction. For this procedure a band of skin around the base of the nipple is removed, bringing the position of the nipple nearer to the breast and decreasing the overall height before closing the wound.

Where the concerns pertain to the areola, some of the tissue is removed from the brown area in a circular form before the surrounding skin is stitched to meet the areola.

It may be the case that a person can experience nipples that differ in appearance from each other, and this procedure can be effective in creating a more symmetrical look. As can correcting inverted nipples, where the nipples are given a revised position, lifting them out of the areola.

Nipple Reduction Surgery

The nipple reduction surgical procedure uses dissolvable stitches and dressings will be needed for around 1 week. Swelling and bruising is commonly experienced for up to 2 weeks after the treatment and you will need to reduce your daily activity levels during this time to allow for healing to be effective, taking time off work also. Scarring should be very discreet and may go fairly unnoticed due to the situation of the incisions.

Follow-up Assessments

The final results will gradually become apparent over a period of around 2 – 3 months, when reducing the size of your nipples and improving the shape may offer a boost to your self esteem.
